Mindfulness In Schools

I have visted over 80 schools and Mindfulness activities are the most powerful tool I use to calm children after playtime. I now incoporate mindfulness activites/teach strategies in all of our projects. It also reminds me to also be present and de-clutter my mind.

What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is the practice of being present and aware of one's thoughts, emotions, and surroundings without judgment. While it is commonly associated with adults, it is also a valuable tool for children. Here are some reasons why mindfulness is important for children:

  1. Improved Attention and Focus: Mindfulness helps children develop the ability to focus on the present moment and pay attention to what is happening around them. It can help them concentrate better in class, be more engaged in their activities, and improve their academic performance.

  2. Better Emotional Regulation: Children who practice mindfulness are better able to manage their emotions and respond to stress in a healthy way. They learn to recognize and accept their feelings without reacting impulsively, which can reduce anxiety and improve mood.

  3. Increased Resilience: Mindfulness can help children build resilience by teaching them to stay present and focused even in difficult situations. This can help them bounce back from setbacks and cope with stressors more effectively.

  4. Improved Social Skills: Mindfulness can improve children's social skills by teaching them to be more empathetic, compassionate, and understanding towards others. They can learn to communicate more effectively, resolve conflicts peacefully, and build positive relationships.

  5. Better Physical Health: Mindfulness can have a positive impact on physical health by reducing stress, improving sleep, and boosting the immune system. Children who practice mindfulness may be less likely to experience headaches, stomachaches, and other physical symptoms related to stress.

Although in a recent study suggests:

School-based mindfulness training does not appear to boost wellbeing or improve the mental health of teenagers, according to research that found many pupils were bored by the course and did not practise it at home.

If taught well in primary schools and pupils understand the science behind why it works, Mindfulness can be an important tool for children to develop attention and focus, regulate emotions, build resilience, improve social skills, and promote physical health. By teaching children to be present and aware of their thoughts and feelings, we can help them cultivate a lifelong habit of self-care and well-being.
